Glycine Promotes Longevity. Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) Shorten Your Life.
While glycine supplementation appears to have a positive impact on longevity, excessive intake of BCAAs may have adverse effects.
I resumed taking glycine in January after a 3 months break since October when I run out of stock and had problems with the customs. I just noticed: I feel my face skin has become thicker, smoother and velvety to touch. It’s probably glycine, since I didn’t change anything else. Don’t have ‘before’ and ‘after’ pictures though.

I’m taking several supplements that according to the published research should do me good. Except for multi-vitamins, I’m not taking them in the capsule form. Mostly I dissolve or suspend them in water. Some supplements, like sweet glycine taste good, some taste like nothing, some blah.. Wouldn’t it be nice if they all tasted good?
I’m bothered by this question: Why can’t my senses of taste or smell tell me whether these supplements would be good or bad for me. There is a basis for that idea, a phenomenon called pica, where people (especially pregnant women) crave non-food substances like chalk, clay, or even paint. It’s often linked to mineral deficiencies, particularly calcium or iron. When an animal gets sick it looks up some herb that helps it. Possibly our modern lifestyle got our senses atrophied.
I’m still looking into the literature on that question. As a digression I learned about five basic taste flavors—sweetness, saltiness, bitterness, acidity and umami taste. Learned about new variations, such as kokumi sensation caused by peptide, or chain of amino acids, called glutathione, gamma-GLU-CYS-GLY. Another one is GLU-VAL-GLY. Interesting that all mentioned variation peptides contain glycine, a sweet amino acid I take as a supplement. One also contains cysteine, I also take it in the form of NAC. Kokumi sensation has three components: complexity, mouthflness, and lingeringness. There is also: fat taste.
Some articles already claim these peptides have life extension properties. We are approaching a point of having supplements that are good for you and also taste good! Then the industry will use them in ultra-processed foods. That could make you overeat like what they did with MSG (glutamate). Who knows?
